Product Review

Like the rising sun, the new Solar lights up the Bell line. Features Bell's ErgoDial fit system, Fusion In-Mold construction, Cam-lock levers for easy strap adjustment and 23 ventilation ports to keep you cool.

Product Description

The Bell Solar Bike Helmet is constructed with a fusion in-mold microshell, which utilizes the process of bonding the helmet's microshell to its EPS foam layer, rather than forming the two separately and taping them together later, to provide a sturdier, more solid helmet. This helmet features Bell's ErgoDial fit system to deliver an easy one-hand adjustment with the press of a button and slide of the dial for a firm, snug and comfortable stability.

The Solar also features cam-lock levers that make it easy to adjust the straps around your ears. For your comfort, this bicycle helmet includes 23 vents that allow cool, fresh air in and warm air out. The Solar helmet comes in Bell's Universal Adult size (54-61cm), weighs 252 grams, and complies with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's safety standards for bicycle helmets.

About Bell
More world champions have worn Bell Helmets than all other helmet brands combined. From Grand Prix racing through the Indy 500 to Olympic cycling, Bell helmets have played a vital role in protecting sportsmen and women for nearly 50 years. His legacy lives on today in Bell's commitment to racing, quality and innovation.

I didn't read all the previous reviews but most discussed the fit. This helmet fit fine for me as well, but more importantly it works. I had a pretty bad accident with bone breaks (collar bone, multiple ribs)requiring surgery and felt a solid head thump on concrete. The helmet compressed and cracked but I had absolutely no head injury. Without a helmet I expect they would have had to wake me up!

As an avid cyclist and racer for 30-plus years, I've long since outgrown the need to be seen using the latest gear endorsed by Lance or Alberto or Andy. Let's face it: A big reason for the high cost of many cycling accessories is marketing and sponsorships. Products like helmets are little more than commodities, so manufacturers have to differentiate their high-end brain buckets by paying big-name riders to wear them.

Helmet technology has evolved to the point where there's little functional difference between entry-level models and the top of the line ones. They all consist of a shell, nylon webbing and some EPS foam. And while the more costly units may carry stickers signifying compliance with multiple certification standards (Snell, ASTM, CPSC, etc.), keep in mind that manufacturers are obligated to pay for the costs of testing along with (in many cases) royalty fees that grant them the privilege of applying the stickers of certain privately-funded safety foundations. I didn't have great confidence in the "universal fit" system - until I tried it. I have owned higher end helmets from Bell and Giro, and this fits as well as any I've owned. I can't see spending $100 for a helmet when this Bell does as well for a third of that.
